In case you haven’t heard of them or their struggle for justice, here’s a description of the current events taking place right now regarding them.
The Cuban 5 are -Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino and René González.
They were in Miami monitoring terrorist activities of Miami ultra right-wing groups who have commited terrorist acts against Cuba in the past. In a hot anti-socialism climate in Miami, they were rail-roaded into jail and were labelled as spies.
In 1998, after a 7-month long trial where they stood no chance of a fair trial because it was in Miami where the CANF (Cuban American National Foundation) hold so much power, they we’re given sentences ranging from 15years to double life-sentences.
Washington has delayed and denied entry for the Cuban-5 family members to visit since their incarceration.
Their case has been the focal point at many Human Rights gatherings.
Finally, this past May, the United Nations finally called their inprisonment a violation of international law.
This past August, the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals declared the convictions null and void, and said each defendant deserved a new trial.
Now, they sit in jail waiting to hear when and where a new trial will start. Family members and humanitarian groups feel that they should be freed since their convictions have been overturned.
The world is watching, their new trial -whenever it gets announced, will be something to watch.
