Buena Vista bassist – Cachaito dies

HAVANA (AFP) — Celebrated bass player Orlando “Cachaito” Lopez — famed for his work with Buena Vista Social Club — died on Monday, sources told AFP.

The 76-year-old had suffered complications following a prostate operation, group members and an associate producer told AFP.

“They operated on his prostate ten days ago, he came out fine, but later there were complications, I am not sure exactly what,” band mate Amado Valdes told AFP.

The musician, who was the nephew of legendary bassist Israel “Cachao” Lopez, died “in a Havana hospital, unfortunately he had various health problems,” according to Freddy Fernandez, an associate producer of the group.

“It is an irreplaceable loss for Cuban music, he is the last remaining member of the bass playing dynasty,” Valdes added.

It also another blow for the Buena Vista Social Club following the loss of Francisco Repilado — better known as Compay Segundo, the pianist Ruben Gonzalez in 2003 and singer Ibrahim Ferrer in 2005. Another band member, “Pio” Leyva, died in 2006.

“It is a great loss for the group and for Cuban music because he was a superb bassist and a brilliant band mate. He was an excellent person and the quality of his music was, honestly, unparalleled,” said Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, the group’s trumpeter.

Created in 1996, Buena Vista Social Club reunited veteran Cuban musicians some of whom had slipped into obscurity.

It quickly became one of the most celebrated Cuban music projects in the last 50 years after giving birth to the Buena Vista Social Club album and a documentary of the same name. Made by German film maker Wim Wenders it was nominated for an Oscar in 2000.

oh yeah vacation

I haven’t even started my vacation list which is kinda weird for me.  I usually like putting a together a list a week before I go to make sure I cover everything.  Not sure what it is, maybe it’s because I fully know what to expect and know what I need, without really thinking about it.

Anywho’s, not much else going on lately.  Working and trying to hit the gym.  I’m seriously looking forward to this summer and I’m praying we actually get 2 solid months of summer this year.  I’m going to make a serious effort to do a lot of overnight hiking trips.  It feels like the olde I get, the more I detest the cold..yeah I must be getting old.

KD OUT!

p.s.  vacationing in varadero next week with Sumeet and my grandmother.  Grandma’s two other sisters and one of their husbands are also making the trip.  Looking forward to some sunny beach days.

lately…

Just thought I’d quickly update….

Things have been going well lately but the stress is there.  We just booked our vacation for end of January so I’m definitely looking forward to it.  It will probably one of our last trips for a while…I think you can guess what is next.

Priorities shifting lately, interests broadening….more then anything lately I really appreciate a good conversation with good peoples.  Been practicing on the tables a lot lately.  Finally got a table for my gear, today I pick up and laptop stand, woot.

Just finished John Perkins “confessions of an economic hitman” for the 2nd time.  Such a great read, all those things you hear about really are true.  The intent to exploit other countries for their resources exists and has been happening for a long time.  As a Canadian citizen who’s country is part of G8, I can’t help but wonder what Canadian companies/mercenaries have done to contribute to the “empire”.

Obama camp declines comment on reported Castro offer

(CNN) – The Obama transition team declined comment
Wednesday on a report that Cuban President Raul Castro might be
interested in meeting with the president-elect at Guantanamo Bay, and
had told an interviewer Cubans could “send [Obama] home with the
American flag that waves over” the U.S. base there.

Asked whether he would be willing to visit Washington to speak with
Obama, Castro instead suggested to actor Sean Penn Guantanamo Bay could
serve as “neutral ground” for discussions. Castro also told Penn, in an
interview published in The Nation, that the two leaders “must meet and begin to solve our problems.”

Raul Castro’s brother, longtime Cuban leader Fidel Castro,
criticized Obama this spring for his position in favor of altering –
but retaining – Washington’s nearly five-decade trade embargo on the
island nation.

Obama came under fire from campaign rivals for his statement at a
CNN/YouTube Democratic primary debate that he would be willing to meet
without preconditions with Castro and other leaders hostile toward the
United States.

not a big of this new fashion trend im finding women wearing (late 20’s – early 30’s)…

-nylons
-open toed shoes
-skin tight jeans
-big huge ugly sweater over top
-then another jacket on top

I see this everywhere downtown. A lot of times you find these girls riding their retro bicycles up pender riding on the fuckin sidewalk, no helmet etc.  They like to open retro hair salons too, we have quite a few.  As you can probably tell, I’m not down with it.

p.s. you will start notice im going to blog more, and tweet more.  Less IM and email.

bored in Davis, CA

yep, bored as shit.  i tend to get bored when traveling by myself quite a bit.  im watching the baseball game, having a beer but yet im booooooored!  anyways, im in Davis to train the Fleet Services department at the university of california davis on our systems. so far, so good.  im at this hotel close to the university, the hallmark inn.  they have free booze between 5-7pm, so far ive hit it up the 2 nights ive been here.

looking forward to the palin-biden debate tomorrow, i cant see palin winning the debate but you never know. apparently she has a good debate record but i suspect biden will come out hard, at least i hope so.  the pundits say he needs to make sure he does come out hard and not take mercy on her for being a women.

i watched the first mccain-obama debate, mccain actually surprised me.  he came off decently, he actually seems to know what he’s talking about unlike bush. his stiff ass arms kinda scare me though. he’s really kinda creepy.  anyways this blogging is boring…later.
